N: 1. phosgene (n): from latin phos “light,” contraction of phaos “light, daylight” (related to phainein “to show, to bring to light) + generator “person or thing that generates,”from Latin generator “a begetter, producer,” agent noun from past participle stem of generare.
2. A highly toxic, colorless gas that condenses at 0°C to a fuming liquid; used as a war gas and in manufacture of organic compounds.
3. Phosgene is extremely toxic by acute (short-term) inhalation exposure. Severe respiratory effects, including pulmonary edema, pulmonary emphysema, and death have been reported in humans.
